Remember the Mel Brooks movie “Blazing Saddles”? There’s a wonderful scene in there where the new Sheriff, who’s black, takes himself hostage once he realizes the townspeople are about to lynch him. When he successfully holds the lynch mob at bay and is allowed safe passage, he says: "Oh baby, you are so talented, and they are so dumb."
Thune’s current threat to vote against the administration sounds like that -- “Hold it. The next man makes a move, the freshman Senator gets it...Drop it! For I swear, I'll blow this Freshman Senator’s head all over this town.” Except Thune isn’t THAT talented and the administration isn’t THAT dumb.
The New York Times has a big Thune story today here.
The most telling line of which might be: “Just what President Bush can do for Mr. Thune is unclear.”
Clinton supposedly pulled Ellsworth off the list at Daschle’s insistence. Well he didn’t do it where everyone could see! Daschle didn’t talk about it until later. Bush can’t just hand Thune the keys to the base and say “Okay, here you go. Keep ‘em flying!” It will be interesting to see if Thune has an end game.
